TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

This focused business unit concentrates on technology management, technology acquisition, project management, civil and process engineering and research and development.

In all its activities, the emphasis is on understanding all options before acting and in anticipating and interacting with every aspect of the water cycle – from rain clouds to final consumers and wastewater treatment.

To avoid the destruction of value inherent in head-to-head competition, a differentiated strategy is focused on innovation through the implementation of new technologies and processes.

Understanding that innovation is not only about creating new technologies, we also incorporate the best of existing assets and resources to create value.

Investigation

The allocation of broken wires in PCP pipelines

Eddy Current Scanning
Is an internal electromagnetic, non-destructive technique for the assessment of pre-stressed concrete pipes.

Eddy Current Steel Scanning
Is technology, which can detect inner and outer losses of wall thickness, even through coating, preventing possible catastrophic water losses.

Thermal Remote Sensing
Results in the detection of major water leaks in the infrastructure. Thermal image recordings over urban areas from an aircraft will provide measurements of heat emission pouring into the atmosphere. This is accomplished by use of state-of-the art thermal imagers that produce high spatial and thermal resolution.

Condition Assessment
Requires a transparent reporting method, which results in a risk map. Mapping is performed by a combination of thermal remote sensing and video recording. This information is obtained by low altitude helicopter flights. C&K Special Services South Africa is in the possession of a helicopter, which is adapted to correlate infrared and visual data GPS coordinates.

Solution

After problem detection, a range of repair solutions is offered. These Include:

a) Carbon Fibre Repair:
We focus on Innovative repair techniques using carbon Fibre loss of structural strength in prestressed concrete pipes due to breaks of prestressed circumferential wires can be repaired with carbon fibre.

b) Seals:
Rand Water has identified that poor quality seals are the main cause of pipe bursts in PCP pipes. We have developed a unique and innovative seal that is easy to install. Production of the seals is in South Africa.

c) Grouting:
Due to years of experience, we have developed special grouting techniques and tools, which maximizes the efficiency of this technology.

d) Team ready for emergency interventions:
We have access to a specialist team, which will investigate and conduct repairs promptly. This team provides the level of support and expertise that is typically required when an emergency arises.

Reporting
We have an expert team that focuses on developing and customizing a GIS system for your organization. All projects completed and information collated are stored in the GIS which enables more informed decision making. In addition, our web-based portal system allows customers to track the performance and progress on the project in a secure and confidential format.
